My First Desert

I am in the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. It is fantastic. I am in San Pedro de Atacama which is a tourist town for both gringos and locals. I arrived on the Saturday of the Easter long weekend, so I thought that maybe I should make a reservation. I did, but they had given my bed away anyways. The nice thing about traveling alone is that you can always fina a bed -- so it only took me about 10 minutes :)

That first night I started to inquire about different tours, and get prices. I knew that I wanted to see the geisers and to swim/float in a salt lake. I ended up doing much more.

On the Sunday I went to the Valley of the Moon, the Valley of Mars (which is often called the Valley of the Dead -- the words are similar in Spanish and some French guy made a mistake a long time ago and now both names are used)and one other Valley. These rocks in one of the Valleys are made of salt and expand and contract witht he heat of the day and night, so if you are quiet you can here them craWe saw the sunset in the Valley of the Moon and it was fantastic, my pictures do not do it justice. The setting sun makes the valley reflect red and pink and blue it is fantastic.
On Monday I woke up at 3:30 am to go to the geiser field, which is at 4400meters above sealevel and active only in the morning when it is cold and the contracted ground pushes down on the hot water. It was excellent -- especially the hotspring, since I was really cold after looking at the geisers.
On the drive back from the hotsprings we saw llamas -- the first ones I have seen.
Then in the afternoon I went to swim in a salt lake -- swimming is really the wrong word -- lay in would be more correct. From the lake we went to some other neat pools, two called the eyes that are perfect circles. Finally we headed to a salt flat. To me it looked like crusty snow -- very neat and the sunset was again beautiful.
This morning I went horseback riding with a girl in my hostel (Laura) -- again great -- this place has been wonderful.
